Bike Boom is no longer in an alley behind a dumpster next to Snappy Sushi.

The used bike and repair shop moved this morning to 389 Highland Avenue, the former home of Your Move Games (and, later, of Bone Appetit pet food store and Buzzy's head shop).

So, I lost a brown satchel. Left it at Diesel Friday morning, came back, and nobody had turned it in. Bad me, no cookie.

There were plenty of things in there that would be valuable to people other than myself - like cash and an iPad. There was one thing in there that would be of no value to anyone but is extremely valuable to me and a real bear to replace, namely my (foreign) passport. So if anyone finds a discarded brown satchel (a tattered Kipling), or a discarded Latvian passport, or something along those lines, please, please pick it up and call me. 857-204-8727. I will be forever in your debt.

The vacant convenience store on Mass. Ave at Day Street today has four big posters in the windows with a 7-Eleven logo on them:

Unfortunately they don't include whatever URL the QR code links to. ~~If anyone here has a smartphone and walks by the place, maybe you can tell us.~~ Thanks to a QR decoding tool provided by squirrelitude below, I now know it goes to http://franchise.7-eleven.com/ . But the locator map on that site doesn't (yet?) show this location as one available for franchising.

Depending on how long you've lived here, you may remember this location as the White Hen Pantry, the Bread & Butter Konvenience [sic], or the temporarily relocated Pemberton Market. (By the way, 7-Eleven bought the entire White Hen chain a couple of years ago.)

Per Ron's earlier post concerning Memorial Day Parade street closures, I wanted to confirm that bikes parked at or near curbs along the parade route must be moved by Sunday morning, May 27th. And yes, that includes bikes parked at bike racks.

DPW will remove bikes still left at these locations on Sunday; they may be retrieved later -- minus their locks, unfortunately.
These are the affected streets:
• Highland Ave., from Walnut St. to Davis Square;
• Holland St., from Davis Square to Teele Square;
• Broadway, from Holland St. to Route 16.

Ron correctly observed that this information was not included in this year's press release, but I will include it in tonight's citywide phone advisory.

It's a necessary part of opening up the sidewalks for parade viewers, and we've been doing it for years. I apologize for any inconvenience -- and invite you to join me in spreading the world. I also invite you to come to the parade. It's by far the biggest and best Memorial Day celebration in the region.

i have a top hat that i want to take on vacation in october, but short of wearing it on the plane i'm not sure how to get it there uncrushed. i don't really want to pack it in my suitcase unless i absolutely have to. are there places i can buy a hatbox for it, so i can carry it on the plane in relative safety? i have a car so it doesn't necessarily have to be a t-accessible place.

pit bull laws in camberville

Anyone know any specifics about pit bull regulations/laws/etc in Somerville and Cambridge? I'm visiting a friend (dog in tow) this weekend to do outdoors stuff and the last thing I want is to get a fine or put my dog in any kind of danger.

When I lived in the DS area last year I remember seeing quite a few bully breeds in the community with no issues, but I want to be sure. When I google all I'm getting is hits on Boston's pit bull restrictions. Are Somerville & Cambridge governed by the same ordinances or do they just not have restrictions at all? She has all of her shots, etc & she's registered in Worcester. Thanks!

Place to park a car before receiving a parking sticker?

Greetings future neighbors!

I am moving into a place near Davis Square soon (either this weekend or the next) and have run into a bit of an issue. I have a car that I will need in the area (for my commute to work in the 'burbs) but haven't applied for a parking permit yet. I assume this will take a little while, and that I will probably be moved in and needing my car before the permit comes. Is there anywhere I can park without needing a permit (preferably somewhere I can keep the car overnight)? Any tips, tricks or suggestions?

Anyone know of someone that can install a tile backsplash in a kitchen? And other misc home repair work - repairing ceiling and painting? I'm not much of a do it yourself and looking for dependability and good craftsmanship. (or craftswomanship)

This Weekly Dig box, designed by artist Cat Tweedie at Artisan’s Asylum, has disappeared from its home outside Mike's Restaurant in Davis Square. If you have any information about its current whereabouts, please contact the Somerville Police and/or craigt@digpublishing.com . Thank you.

It is one of five Asylum-designed Dig boxes placed around Somerville earlier this spring.

Memorial Day parade this Sunday

The City of Somerville will hold its annual Memorial Day parade this Sunday, May 27. The parade leaves City Hall at 1 pm, marching down Highland Avenue to Davis Square, Holland Street to Teele Square, and finally Broadway to the Veterans' Cemetery next to Johnnie's Foodmaster.

According to the official press release, "The parade will include 12 marching bands, along with a wide range of community and school groups, the popular specialty units of the Aleppo Shriners, as well as representatives of local veterans', fire, and police units from surrounding cities and towns. For the first time, the parade will include a professional women's soccer team, the Boston Breakers who will march with players and coaches from the Somerville Youth Soccer League. "

The press release also outlines the usual car parking restrictions along the route and on side streets near the parade's start and end points.

Last year, the city asked people to remove bicycles parked to signposts, parking meters, and bike racks along the parade route, and said that the DPW would impound any bike still parked on the route after 9 am Sunday. I don't see this mentioned in this year's press releases.

Herbstalk event coming up...

Herbstalk 2012 is taking place on June 9th in Somerville at the Center for Arts at the Armory from 10:30 am to 6pm. This grassroots event is devoted to educating and inspiring our local community about the common and safe use of medicinal herbs. The day-long event will feature over 20 educational talks given by local herbalists, holistic nutritionists, naturopathic doctors and natural health counselors on a variety of topics geared towards herbal enthusiasts of all ages. We will also host a marketplace featuring local businesses and handmade herbal products.

$5 suggested donation. Doors open to the public at 10:30 am.

nice mid-century modern chairs for sale

Hi everyone. I'm moving and sadly need to get rid of a few things I've held onto for a long time.

This is a set of two matching mid-century modern living room chairs that were custom re-upholstered about six years ago in stain and tear resistant faux suede (vegan!). These were my grandmother's in the 50s, and I've held onto them for years, but I'm going to be leaving the state soon and will sadly have to let them go, hopefully to a good home. They're heavy and sturdy. They have held up beautifully. You can definitely tell they were made to last and will last much, much longer. They're a beautiful gold color.

I'm asking $150 for the set, but I'm hoping more for a good home for 'em than lotsa $$. I'm at the corner of Hancock and Summer St.

I also have a set of matching couches in a complementary red color if you're interested.

The Davis Square farmers' market opens its season this Wednesday, May 23, from noon to 6 pm. The market usually operates until Thanksgiving.

The last 'Winter' indoor market at the Armory will be this Saturday, May 26, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. The Union Square outdoor market reopens next Saturday, June 2.

But I saw the guy who pulled over and grabbed it. He took out the carousel, set it aside, and just left it there. Which seems pretty obnoxious to me, since it turned the situation into trash-on-the-curb. What's up with that? Why would someone want a microwave without the inside bits?
